News and Analysis

Louisiana First Month Legal Betting Figures Are In

Players in Louisiana, which celebrated its first whole month of online legal sports betting in February, have placed a monumental $211.0m across the month. That’s a brilliant start for US sportsbooks in this state.

Connecticut Sees Gross Gaming Revenue Dip Across all Sectors for Feb

Meanwhile, In Connecticut, things aren’t looking so rosy, with a drop of 8.5% GGR in Feb for online casinos, and sports betting has also seen similar declines when compared to January’s figures. DraftKings continued to lead the way in both verticals, while Fanduel stands in second place.

BetMGM Gets NJDGE Fine for Allowing Restricted Bets

The NJDGE has fined BetMGM $25,000 for allowing bets on two restricted college football games, one on March 10th and the other on March 20th. BetMGM broke betting regulations as it is not permitted to provide markets on college games not held in NJ or if an NJ team is not playing.

Evolution Gaming Make US Tax Plea

Everyone knows that online gaming will be massive in America, since this is the world’s largest gaming market already. As a result of this, we are seeing many companies investing heavily today to secure their place in the future of online gaming.

What is needed now is the same thing that made the great land-based markets flourish – low gaming taxes and a great offering. Nevada and New Jersey have the lowest gaming tax rates in America and inevitably have seen the most investment.

~ Todd Haushalter, CPO, Evolution Gaming

This week Evolution’s CPO, Todd Haushalter, has come out with an industry-wide plea to US regulators asking for the implementation of fair gaming taxes that will allow the industry to flourish. He warned against tariffs becoming prohibitive and stopping game providers and other stakeholders from innovating, highlighting how in Nevada, land-based casinos pay a 6.75% tax rate on GGR, while in New York, the figure is 51%.

We’ve got to say we have to agree, a more consistent tax rate across states or a max federal tax cap set on GGR would be beneficial, allowing the gambling industry to grow and flourish in all states similarly and for providers to focus spending on new products and research and development.
