New York online casinos are not currently legal, but they could be soon as there are two bills under consideration. Things are all change in The Empire State, and it’s only good news for gamblers as in 2022, online sports betting became regulated, and just a few weeks later, Senate Bill 8412 (and Assembly Bill 9436) was introduced; if passed, either will legalize online casinos.
Legal online sports betting went live in New York on January 8, 2022. The bill had been in the works for three years but saw a major breakthrough last year when then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the new regulations into law and included them in the state’s budget and tax framework.
As well as legalizing online sports betting, it created the New York Gaming Commission, which heads all gaming regulations and compliance in the state. Initially, the bill made way for nine potential sportsbooks in NYS. It also includes a one-time fee of $25mn. for operators and a 51% tax rate, which is the highest internet gambling tax rate in the US.
Now that Governor Cuomo is out of office, there is already change afoot, which seeks to increase the total number of potential sportsbooks, and, thus lower the tax rate burden on each operator, with licenses rising from nine to sixteen by 2024 and tax rates reduced from 51% to 25%. However, this is subject to two new bills being passed.
