Nevada is one of the world’s most famous gambling locations, with millions of gamblers visiting the Silver State every year, hoping to get lucky playing at iconic US casinos. In this state, you can enjoy commercial casinos, bet on sports and play poker in person and online. While the state is home to one of the largest gambling markets worldwide, online casinos are not legal.
Nevada has a long history of legal gambling, decriminalizing games of chance in 1865, legalizing gambling in 1931 (as a strategy to relieve the Great Depression), and legalizing sports betting on horse racing and team sports in 1949. By 1955 the Nevada Gaming Control Board was established, and in the 1980s, most of the Vegas Strip as we now know it was constructed.
Nevada was one of four states exempt from PASPA, which came into force in 1992 and banned sports betting at the federal level. This was due to the “Grandfather” clause, which states that territories that already had regulated sports betting did not have to outlaw the practice. In 2001, NV regulated betting on collegiate events, and in 2010, it was the first US state to debut sports betting apps.
2013 was another landmark year as the state legalized online poker and entered the multi-state poker agreement with Delaware and New Jersey, facilitating cross-border games and shared pools. Lastly, the Silver State legalized DFS in 2015. However, no provider offers this vertical currently.
Nevada is now home to one of the most robust gambling markets globally. And yet, online casinos are not legal.
There are 13 sportsbook providers in Nevada. Each provider is partnered with multiple land-based operators:
This process is more complex than in other states as you have to complete in-person registration:
Gambling laws in Nevada stipulate that your first deposit must be made in person. Check the minimum deposit amount before joining.
Online casinos are not legal in NV, and there’s strong opposition to them from the commercial sector, who are concerned online casinos will eat into their revenue. However, in 2019, Nevada smashed revenue records hitting a handle of $614.1 million. With mobile sports betting blowing up in the state and providing more tax revenue than ever, it wouldn’t be surprising if the state looked towards online casinos in the future, but for now, there’s no movement.
So you can’t play real money casino games online in Nevada, but you can play at legal sweepstakes casinos. Sweepstakes are sites that provide casino games for free. You’ll bet using a virtual currency that you win through playing, collect via bonuses, and can, at some sites, opt to buy.
Sweepstakes casinos offer the fun of a real money gambling site without risk, as you won’t stake cash. Most sweepstakes offer casino slots, but some sites, like BetRivers.Net, offer table games and live dealers. Plus, all the games are stocked from genuine casino software, like NetEnt and Evolution Gaming.

Sweepstakes are entirely legal as they do not use real money gambling. Instead, they use virtual currencies that are awarded through free daily bonuses. You’ll also win more coins as you play.
As you’ll rely on casino bonuses if you want to play for free, comparing what Nevada online casinos offer is more important. At sweepstakes, the main bonus is the daily deal, which can be a money wheel spin, like at Gambino Slots, a sign-on bonus, or just a free coin package given at 4-hourly intervals, like at BetRivers.Net.
You’ll also get bonuses for completing missions, sharing your progress on social media, referring your friends to the sites, joining competitions, and lots more.
Joining a sweepstakes casino is easy, and when it’s offered, you’re encouraged to sync up your Google or Facebook account. If you take this option, the operator will automatically register your casino account in seconds.
If this option isn’t available, you’ll need to register using an email address, then create a username and password. Whichever road you take, you’ll be playing in minutes. But don’t forget to claim your new player no deposit casino bonus!
